Most visitors to Sri Lanka need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they fly. Applying is straightforward and entirely online, but rules and fees change from time to time, so a little preparation makes arrival smooth.
This advisory summarises the process as our consular desk handles it every day, and explains the optional arrival services that turn a long-haul landing into a calm transfer. Always confirm current requirements on the official ETA website before you travel.
Section 01 • Before You Fly
Applying for Your ETA
Apply through the official Sri Lanka ETA portal well before departure, using the passport you will travel on. Approval usually arrives by email and is linked electronically to your passport.
Beware of look-alike websites that add their own service fees. If you prefer, our consular desk can prepare and submit the application for you and follow it through to approval.
- Passport Validity
- 6 mo
- Your passport should be valid for at least six months from arrival.
- Typical Tourist Stay

- Standard tourist ETAs usually allow an initial 30-day stay.

Section 02 • Landing in Colombo
Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) at Katunayake is the country's main gateway. After immigration and baggage reclaim, arrivals pass through customs into a busy public hall where drivers and guides wait with name boards.
"The difference between a stressful arrival and a serene one is usually just thirty minutes of planning before you fly."
Keep a copy of your ETA approval, return ticket and first night's address to hand, as immigration officers may ask to see them.
Section 03 • Premium Services
Fast-Track Assistance and Private Lounges
Meet-and-assist services can greet you as you leave the aircraft, escort you through the arrival formalities and help with your baggage, while private lounges offer a quiet place to wait before your flight home.
Meet & Assist
A representative meets you at the gate, guides you through formalities and hands you to your chauffeur.
Departure Lounges
Premium lounges offer dining and quiet space before long-haul flights home.
