The Elusive Ghost of Yala: Tracking the Sri Lankan Panthera Pardus Kotiya

Field notes from the scrub jungle of the south-east: where to look, when to go, and how to watch Sri Lanka's leopard without disturbing it.

A leopard rests on a granite outcrop in Yala at golden hour, a favourite vantage point for surveying its territory.

The Sri Lankan leopard is the island's apex predator, a subspecies found nowhere else on earth. With no lions or tigers to compete with, it is often active by day as well as by night, which is why Yala, on the dry south-east coast, is one of the best places in the world to see a wild leopard.

A sighting is never guaranteed, and that is part of the magic. Good trackers read pugmarks in the sand, listen for the alarm calls of langurs and spotted deer, and know which rocks the resident cats favour at each hour of the day.

Section 01 • The Territory

Rocks, Water and Shade: Reading Leopard Territory

Yala's landscape of scrub, lagoons and granite outcrops gives leopards everything they need: shade by day, water nearby and high rocks from which to watch for prey.

Most safaris explore Block 1, the park's most visited zone and its best-known leopard territory. Quieter blocks reward patience with fewer vehicles and the chance of sloth bears, elephants and crocodiles at the waterholes.

Section 02 • Field Craft

The Tracker's Craft: Pugmarks, Alarm Calls and Patience

Morning drives begin at dawn, while leopards are still active after the night. Trackers scan the sandy tracks for fresh pugmarks and stop the engine at every alarm call, waiting in silence for a tail to flick in the grass.

"You do not find the leopard. You wait somewhere good, stay quiet, and let the leopard decide."
— Kanishka de Silva, Field Notes, Yala

Half-day drives suit most travellers, but a full day in the park, with a picnic lunch at a designated rest area, lets you avoid the busiest hours and be in the right place when the cats stir again in the late afternoon.

Section 03 • Responsible Viewing

Low-Impact Safari: How to Watch Without Crowding

Popularity brings pressure. Jeeps crowding a single leopard can block its path and stress the animal. Choose operators who keep their distance and move on when a sighting turns into a scrum.

Fewer Vehicles

Ask for quieter blocks or a full-day permit to escape the busiest hours around the main sightings.

Silent Engines

A good driver switches off at sightings and never leaves the track to get closer.

Section 04 • Safari Checklist

What to Bring on Safari

Yala is hot, dusty and bright. Pack light, but pack well:

  • Neutral Clothing Khaki, olive and sand tones blend in; avoid bright colours.

  • Binoculars & Zoom Lens Leopards often rest far from the track on distant rocks.

  • Scarf or Buff Keeps the dust out on open jeeps along the sandy tracks.

  • Sun Hat & Water Shade is scarce once the sun climbs over the scrub.
